The Kulaijaya popular and famous Char Koey Teow during the evening

The nameless yet famous char koey teow stall (N1.65992 E103.60263) is located along Jalan Ibrahim of Kulai Besar. It's easy to spot the stall by coming through Jalan Ismail (which is the street on the left from JB direction after KFC, Maybank and BSN Kulaijaya), once turn in...the second turn on the right. Another landmark same row with the stall is Clinic Chai which is 2-3 shops away...

The stall is open around 5pm, and the owner set his own target daily and the rice noodles finish very fast around 7.30-8pm. Even their business hour stated 4-9pm, but hardly can see the wok continue to fry after 8pm due to the local demand.

We were there around 7.30pm and luckily the owner said the koey teow still available, and we only ordered 2 plates because we had to spared some space in our stomach because of our Kulai food trail in that evening.

I noticed the skillful old man keep frying the koey teow non-stop since we stepped in...

 photo IMG_9713_zps4a8440ee.jpg

Even he was trying to posed to my camera, but I missed it!...

 photo IMG_9717_zpsb5148743.jpg

The pleasing plate of Char Koey Teow spread out the nice aroma when it served on the table, it was a simple flat rice noodles fried with eggs, bean sprouts and cockles without the chives and lards. I like the fresh cockles very much, unlike many stalls in JB providing the frozen cockles which totally kill the sweetness of it...

Char Koey Teow of Kulaijaya street stall

There's actually still rooms for intense "wok kei" (literally breath of wok over the high heat in Cantonese), maybe it was due to the local preference of the taste.

From the short chat with the owner, I realized that the stall had been operated since 39 years ago and been through the third generation. It must be the magical taste that kept the long history of the local delicacy - Char Koey Teow.

Do drop by if you happen in the area during the stall operating hours, it might surprise you by the plate of delicious Char Koey Teow of Kulaijaya.

The nameless Kulaijaya (formerly known as Kulai) main road Chicken Chop stall

The Kulaijaya Main Road Chicken Chop stall (N1.66207 E103.60152) is famous around the area and many of the local grew together with the chicken chop, located along the main road and next to the Kulaijaya Centre Point Building. It has more than 30 years history and the son of the stall owner is helping his father nowadays...positively will be pass over to his next generation soon in the future.

The stall is open on 8pm everyday, and we were quite early that evening...watching they setup the stall and everything...
Once everything ready, their son continue to take order from the customers...

After look at the simple and easy understand menu, we just ordered the popular chicken chop with the additional egg and sausage.

It took a moment to served on our table...the simple and yet popular in Kulaijaya Main Road Chicken Chop.

The Kulaijaya Chicken Chop

The simple chicken chop filled with nice aroma, served with deep fried chicken, fries, baked beans, sausage, soft boiled egg and cucumbers.
It was really 'simple'.

 photo IMG_9726_zps0e67a57d.jpg

It was crispy on the outer skin and succulent inside. The chicken was just nice, moist and not over cooked. The other side dish also not bad at all. Anyway, with the reasonable price of the chicken chop, we didn't set a high expectation for it but the dish served on table was unexpectedly good!

 photo IMG_9728_zps4d624312.jpg

The chicken chop above cost less than RM12, very filling.
It's simple and nice meal if you really looking for the fast and traditional chicken chop around the Kulaijaya area during the evening. It wasn't heavenly good and value for money.

I just simply like the traditional way of setting and admired the long history of the stall, I will be back again whenever I need a quick bite.

Pun Heong Dim Sum Restaurant - 品香点心包点茶室 at Kulai Main Road, Kulaijaya - Johor.

Kedai Pun Heong 品香点心包点茶室 (N1.64570 E103.61609) is the local Malaysia name of the restaurant and if you notice there's a smaller signage before you walk in the restaurant stated 'Chop Pun Heong'. With the name of "Chop", it means the shop or restaurant is having a long history since the 60s or 70s, because during that era and most of the Chinese shop have the word "Chop". Pun Heong Dim Sum Restaurant had started their business since 60 years ago and this was the first dim sum restaurant I came across that operating in the evening session...

 photo IMG_9706_zps21c5f4d7.jpg
Pun Heong Dim Sum Restaurant at Kulaijaya

The restaurant is situated along the Kulaijaya town Main Road (Jalan Besar) which is quite easy to locate. As the local called that area is 19 miles of Kulai. It has the rustic ambience and we felt like walking into a time machine...simple and typical 'shop' with no different from the others in year 70s...I believe Pun Heong (品香) must be one of the pioneer Dim Sum restaurant running their business in Kulaijaya.

 photo IMG_9708_zps0af98ca6.jpg
Typical Chinese type of restaurant

There was only another table occupied while we stepped in (around 7pm), that gave me a chance to had a little chat to the owner who is the grandson of the founder of the shop, he told me that all their dim sum and bao (stuffed bun) are make and process in their shop...that means all are freshly prepare and steam within the same area. And he politely recommended their popular big bao 大包 (pork bun), char siew bao 叉烧包 (bbq pork bun), plate of siew mai 烧卖 and pai-kuat 排骨 (ribs) to us.

 photo IMG_9701_zps0d3f94ca.jpg

My first grabbed was the Da Bao (big stuffed bun), reason was strongly recommended by friends!

 photo IMG_9700_zps6d2494b7.jpg
Da bao 大包 from Pun Heong

The bao was juicy and tasty! It generously stuffed with plenty of pork, chicken and eggs. The outer flour skin was soft and not thick like others. I like it very much!

The Da Bao was generously stuffed with the ingredients

And surprisingly, the char siew bao 叉烧包 equally good! Filled with gravy and won't feel the dryness of it! Especially the flour skin was tender. Excellent!

Tasty pork in the bun

Beside the nice bao, we did tried out their siew mai 烧卖 (pork dumplings). It doesn't had the colourful deco as others but it was nice and not porky...

The pork ribs was above average and I remember that it was really hot when served on our table.

Overall we were satisfied with the dim sum and the bao. The price of above were really reasonable and we can't enjoy the nice dim sum like this with their price at Johor Bahru at all.
Before we left the restaurant, I noticed the shop was full house! Well, realized that the customers mostly are regular here...

I'll definitely drop by again if I'm happen around Kulaijaya.

Restoran Yeen Lai 云来点心楼(古来) at Kulaijaya, Johor.

Yeen Lai Restaurant (云来点心楼) (N1.66189 E103.60180) is located along the main road of Kulai town. It's one of the oldest shop at Kulai and so do the history started since about 30 years ago...the name of 'Yeen Lai' is well known as 'Yun Lai (云来)' within Johor Bahru, because of their franchises flooded everywhere... even in Bukit Gambir, the upper north of Johor state.

Yeen Lai Restaurant 云来点心楼

According to the local, this was where the famous Yun Lai (云来点心楼) originated and it's the first historical shop of the business...nowadays, the name of Yun Lai spread every corner of Johor Bahru...

 photo IMG_9627_zps2e6cd51e.jpg

We visited the restaurant around noon time, it was not crowded...the dim sum business is handling by group of foreign workers except the cashier. We found out the production of the dim sum had moved to further up 21 miles at Kulai town, and the dim sum are transported every day to this 'old' shop to keep the freshness of the food.

 photo IMG_9626_zps96181bbd.jpg

We ordered the chicken feet, Siew Mai (烧卖) and Char Siew Bao (叉烧包). Overall good!

Char Siew Bao (叉烧包)

The chicken feet were a bit special on the springy skin, the tiny bones were not messy dropping...Siew Mai was average and the Char Siew Bao was tender on the outer side, juicy and tasty inside, it was one of the nice char siew bao I had within JB and Kulai.

Price was reasonable and worth the second visit.

The only disadvantage is the shop too close to the main road that makes you cannot enjoy the dim sum peacefully, but I guess it became the 'culture' of this dim sum restaurant where the customers won't bother about it anymore...

Kampua Mee 干盘麵 from Intat Restaurant at Taman Indahpura, Kulaijaya.

The Intat Restaurant 运达茶餐室 (N1.64242 E103.61460) is located at Jalan Kenanga 29/17 of Taman Indahpura, Kulaijaya. The restaurant is behind the back row of shop lots which do not facing the main road, and it's take time to search for it sometime...

 photo IMG_9605_zps11825641.jpg
Intat Restaurant

The shop is a simple and traditional Chinese kopitiam style, and they are popular with the Kampua mee 干盘麵 and Sarawak laksa. The owner said they started the business since 12 years ago...

 photo IMG_9603_zpsce3afef4.jpg
The environment of Intat Restaurant

The Kampua mee is originated from the Fu Chow of Sibu - Sarawak. It's a bit similar with the local wan tan mee (云吞麵), similar topping...but the noodle is more eggy, hard and springy. Normally the Kampua mee is serve with minced pork, BBQ pork and shallots with dark soy sauce. But the version from Intat Restaurant was slightly different where they added some crunchy roasted pork on it, we like it very much!

Kampua mee (noodle) originated from Sibu - Sarawak

Beside the Kampua mee, we also won't miss out the Sarawak Laksa which also selling from the same shop.
The different with Sarawak laksa and local JB laksa is the gravy without Santan (coconut milk), and it taste with mild curry flavor. Normally the laksa serve in yellow noodle or mee-hoon (vermicelli) with prawns, bean sprouts, fish cake and eggs. The taste was above average, I like they serve the laksa in the clay pot where the heat is maintain until the last drop! It's another dish worth trying!
