Siang Lin Muar Assam Fish Restaurant (祥林巴东亚叁鱼) at Sakeh, Muar.

The Siang Lin Restaurant (N2.05395 E102.58461) is located along Jalan Sakeh of Muar town. It was recommended by the owner of Restaurant KK at Rosmerah area of Taman Johor Jaya. Advise not to take the address and find the restaurant, because it has no street name...we spend almost 45 minutes to find the shop. Well, the best way is using GPS device and the restaurant is marked in Malfreemaps.

Restoran Siang Lin

The restaurant was crowded when we were there on the Saturday evening...waited for about 15 minutes for our table and waste no time! Order our favorite dishes immediately!
*  Same as Merlin Restaurant, we have to place the order at the kitchen.

The order :-
*  Assam Fish
*  The Dragon Tougue (dry type of fish)
*  Sambal Sotong (squid)
*  Steam Lala (clam)

All the taste of the dishes were above average! Similar to the 2 restaurant I mentioned above - Merlin Restaurant and Restaurant KK.
The Assam fish was nice and tender, but the Assam soup was cooked to the perfect taste! I prefer the assam soup here than the other two...the sambal sotong was above average. Dragon tougue fish was normal, the clams was Nice! The taste was unique and hardly can find in Johor Bahru area...
The dinner was great and satisfied!

The Damage : About RM35 included drinks for 2 adults and 1 child. (Reasonable!)

It's worth for another visit! And it's one of the Assam Fish Restaurant you cannot miss if you are fans of Assam fish!

Another visit to Merlin Restaurant at Muar, Johor

We had another visit to Merlin Restaurant (N02 02.788 E102 34.729) at Muar couple a months ago, this time we came for lunch and the dishes we ordered almost the same as the our first visit.

Our order as below :-
1)  Kankong Belacan (Vegetable)
2)  Oyster Omelette (instead of fried fish egg of first visit)
3)  Deep fried 'Dragon Tongue' (Fish)
4)  Sambal Squid with petai bean (sator bean)
5)  Assam Fish (The signature dish)

Kangkong Belacan

Oyster Omelette

Deep Fried Dragon Tongue Fish

Sambal Sotong and Petai bean

Assam Fish (The signature dish)

Well, the food quality maintain perfectly! Every foods had their marvelous taste of it, that's one of the reason we like to visit this restaurant because it never let us down so far! The soup of the Assam Fish was sour and spicy as it's standard, that was also our main concern about their Signature Dish - The Muar Assam Fish. Another good reason about the restaurant which was the price of the foods were very reasonable!

But please don't visit it during Chinese New Year, don't ask me why...just avoid it!

Another visit to Glutton Street of Muar town, Johor.

We came to this Glutton street (N2 02.811 E102 34.123) of Muar a few times but just didn't snap some photos of the foods we had until this trip...

The street was busy as usual every day when you pass by...we had to parked our car quite so distance from the street. Noted the first building (corner unit) was under renovation or maybe re-furnish, hope they will preserve the colonial architecture...(that was on November 2009) Wondering how's it's look like now?

The Glutton Street of Muar

Initially we wanted to dine in the corner kopitaim (which was my favorite shop) but there were not many stalls available during that time, because it was almost 3pm...

The corner kopitiam at Glutton Street

The Famous Roasted Pork stall still operating...

Therefore we decided to try on the second 'kopitiam' which selling the Duck rice/noodle.

The Duck rice/noodle stall on the second shop

I ordered the Stewed Duck noodle immediately, and it was serve on table in a minutes!

Stewed Duck

The noodle (dry type)

And my wife ordered the Fried Carrot cake (菜頭粿) from the stall in-front of the shop...

The Fried Carrot Cake hawker along Glutton Street

The Fried Carrot Cake

I'm satisfied with the Stewed Duck Noodle but Disappointed about the Fried Carrot Cake!

Anyway, I think it's all because of the Historical reason...where many peoples live and grow from the street (or maybe within the vincity), they are so familiar with the foods taste here! It doesn't matter how, that are their childhood taste! That will be same as myself...

We had a walked around the street after our meal. Found another back alley also full of hawker stalls, "We will be back again!" I told my wife. Haha!

The back alley with full of hawkers

Lastly, spotted this 'Traditional Barber shop' along the street...

Chinese New Year 2010 at Bukit Gambir, Muar

Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is commonly called "Lunar New Year", because it is based on the lunisolar Chinese calendar. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as chú xī. It literally means "Year-pass Eve". Sources from Wiki.

The period around Chinese New Year is also the time of the largest human migration, when migrant workers in China, as well as overseas Chinese around the world travel home to have reunion dinners with their families on Chinese New Year's Eve. More interurban trips are taken in mainland China in this 40-day period than the total population of China. This period is called chunyun (春運 or 春运, Pinyin: chūn yùn). Sources from Wiki.

After the reunion dinner, some families go to local temples, hours before the new year begins to pray for a prosperous new year by lighting the first incense (Joss Stick) of the year; however in modern practice, many households hold parties and even hold a countdown to the new lunar year. Sources from Wiki.

Big Dragon Joss Sticks are light up

I usually spent my Chinese (Lunar) New Year at Bukit Gambir - Muar once in 2 years. The routine is the same every year where everyone put on their New shirts and trousers after shower before having our Reunion dinner. Some families celebrate their Reunion during lunch. After the dinner, everyone are preparing for the Big day! Tables for praying, fire crackers and fireworks are in order.

Chinese New Year is the time to celebrate the family reunion and thanksgiving. Normally the Chinese will pray to gods for good luck, wealth and the family ancestors. The ceremony will take hours and follow by the burning the fire crackers and fireworks...

There are many items on the praying table...

Foods and others on the praying table

Once the clock hit 12 midnight on the Eve, everyone are ready...most of them will pray for luck, wealth, everything they want on the coming year...

Family members (include children) are ready for the praying ceremony

I'm always Love to capture the 'Fire' where all the joss sticks burns togerther...

The joss stick or another word 'Incense' burning...

After the praying ceremony, it's time everyone were waiting for...Fire crackers time!
They will burn as many as they can...

The common fire crackers on Chinese New Year

After the loud fire crackers noise on the Chinese New Year Eve (midnight), the show continue with the Fireworks!
Yes, you are right! It's a sleepless night!!

And you see all the children are happily holding the fireworks everywhere at this Serom and Bukit Gambir area.

The Chinese New Year atmosphere was very much better in the small towns or villages compare with the city area in Malaysia. I'm not sure about other country...
At this moment onwards, every Chinese are fill with Happy and Excitement!!

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!

Mythology
According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nien (Chinese: pinyin: nián). Nien would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nien ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nien was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nien was afraid of the colour red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nien. From then on, Nien never came to the village again. The Nien was eventually captured by Hongjun Laozu, an ancient Taoist monk. The Nien became Hongjun Laozu's mount. Sources from Wiki.

Traditional Watch Shop at Bukit Gambir, Johor

Traditional Watch Shop

Spotted this watch shop at the town of Bukit Gambir. Think of keeping this photo for the future....because I believe it's really difficult to find this kind of Watch shop nowadays in our daily life....
Do you see any shop like this in your area?

Apologies of the poor quality photo, it's snap from my mobile phone.

Bentayan Hawker Center, Muar - Johor.

Bentayan Hawker Center (N2°02.955' E102°34.391') is located at the end of Jalan Bentayan where it's connected to main road. My last visit is about more than a years ago, this time I found the hawker center was renovated to a better environment.

Bentayan Hawker Center, Muar.

I believe some of the stalls here started their business many decades ago...(It might bring back some memories for you?!)
Once we found a table (Not really crowded in Saturday night), we started to order some light foods to fill the table...

And not to miss out the Otah-otah from Muar.

Muar Otah-otah

The Otah-otah was not so good compare with the one selling at residential area (N2°04.263' E102°34.445'), it was not juicy & spicy enough.

The stalls of Bentayan Hawker Center

We also order the Fried Oyster which was not bad! It's better than those I had it at JB.

Fried Oyster of Muar

The name Bentayan is started from the Fortaleza de Muar built by the Portuguese to defend the attacks of Dutch and Aceh, this fort (triangle shape) went through ONLY two battles at Muar river in 1615 and 1616. The modern and present name of this site called "Bentayan". (You can Google more about the history of Muar from the internet)
But you will not see any structures related to the Fort around this area anymore...it was 393 years ago...

Kuang Fei Beef Noodle at Tangkak, Johor

Kuang Fei Beef Noodle at Tangkak, Johor. (N2°15.931' E102°32.402')

This restaurant is located at Jalan Solok which is close to the first traffic light (if you drive from the NSE toll) of the Tangkak town.
The business hour is morning until 3pm.

I love this Beef noodle since the day one I eat beef!

Honestly, I miss the timing many times when I came here....mostly is too late! So this time I came in the morning for not to miss it again. The standard size of the Beef Noodle is MYR5.00 each, but you can have the small or the big which are MYR4.00 or MYR6.00 each.

The Tangkak Kuang Fei Beef Noodle.

The comparisons within this and the Beef Noodle (which is also from Tangkak) at Taman Maju Jaya - Johor Bahru are :-
* The beef is more tender than the JB stall
* The soup is not as thick as the JB stall.
* Last, quantity the beef they provide is much more than the JB stall.

I love it very much and I rated the Best Beef Noodle I ever have!

It's serve by young guys, I believe this are the new generations of their grand parents.

The environment of the shop. Honestly, it's quite clean.

The damage was MYR24.00 (Include drinks) for 4 bowl of beef noodles.

This happened to every bowl after 15 minutes...

The shop lots opposite Kuang Fei Restaurant.

Rated : 4.9/5

Hua Bee Biscuit Shop at Tangkak, Johor

This shop is situated at Jalan Solok, another few shops after the famous Kuang Fei Beef noodle of Tangkak. (N2°15.957' E102°32.378'). They also selling many types of local cookies & biscuits.

Hua Bee Biscuit Shop

We were just happen to be here drop by to see anything interesting. One thing attract me was the Green Bean Paste Pastry (a.k.a. Tambun Biscuit at Penang). I never try it before especially at Tangkak. So we just bought 2 boxes (One big & one small), it cost MYR5.50 for small box and MYR10.00 for big box.

Tangkak Green Bean Paste Pastry

The biscuit below....we used to call it 'Cow ear biscuit' in Hokkien.

Each pack is selling at MYR3.50. Quite cheap and reasonable.

Variety of local biscuits and it's really make me recall those happy moment of my childhood! How about you? :)

After hanging around for 30 minutes, bought what we want....I noticed this hawker which is just 2 two shops away from the Hua Bee. It's only has 4 tables for customers and it's FULL! I wonder what so nice about it?! Then I realized he was selling the Laksa, and seems like every customers also tasted it. So I decided to try it, but because of no place for me....I just 'Ta-pau' (pack away). Anyway, the taste was average....nothing to shout about it.

Laksa Hawker at Tangkak

I believe it's just the hawker been selling his laksa noodle many decades ago, and most of the locals have grow together with it. Therefore, they already so get used with the taste of the noodle.....
It's happen to all of us, I am definitely LOVE the foods from my hometown. Because I taste it since young untill now....
So, what is yours favorite childhood food?
